CPEC : As China Seen It : Analysis Of State Perception (2015-2023)

Abstract

As an important component of "China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)", the "China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)" has garnered considerable attention for its potential to reshape regional geopolitical and promote economic growth. This study employs public discourse analysis to investigate in depth the Chinese perception about CPEC from 2015 to 2022. By systematically analyzing official government documents, white papers, speeches, and news articles, this study identifies narratives consistently emphasizing the mutually beneficial nature of CPEC, demonstrating China's commitment to fostering cooperation and development in partnership with Pakistan. The discourse emphasizes the positive effects of CPEC on Pakistan's infrastructure and economic development, thereby enhancing China's reputation as a dependable and supportive ally. In addition, state perception emphasize the alignment of CPEC with the broader objectives of the BRI, presenting it as evidence of China's commitment to multilateralism and global connectivity. China's cautious approach to potential security threats to CPEC, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, necessitates proactive collaboration with Pakistan's security forces to safeguard the corridor's progress. These results contribute to a nuanced comprehension of China's strategic motivations behind CPEC and its implications for regional and international relations, providing policymakers and researchers with valuable insights. This research illuminates the evolving dynamics of China's engagement with Pakistan and its broader vision for regional development and connectivity as CPEC continues to influence the economic and political landscape of South Asia.
